By 2025 the ocean will contain one tonne of plastic for every three tonnes of fish, and by 2050, there may be more plastic in the ocean than fish. Landfills are often brimming with plastic waste and pose an environmental threat to rivers, groundwater and the ocean.

NUTEC Plastics: With Irradiation Towards a Circular Economy

Nuclear science and technology play an important role in addressing issues in low-carbon energy demand, human health, food security and environmental pollution, and contribute to socioeconomic development around the world.

The IAEA works to foster greater interest in these technologies among youth, including in Asia and the Pacific. Student and teacher winners from a Virtual NST Education Competition visited the IAEA in Austria in May 2022 to present their projects and learn hands on about the many uses of nuclear technology.

Behind the Scenes at the 2021 UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) – Glasgow, United Kingdom

In Sri Lanka, women play a critical role in driving rural communities' economic development and ensuring food security. According to the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Sri Lanka is largely self-sufficient in animal products except in dairy, where national consumption has steadily grown since the 1970s, outpacing supply. Boosting dairy production in the country will help empower women in rural areas and improve the country’s self-reliance.

Celebrating 60 Years of IAEA Environment Laboratories: Ceremony at the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco

The IAEA Environment Laboratories in Monaco comprise three separate marine laboratories that are unique within the United Nations system. They use nuclear and isotopic techniques to understand and propose mitigation strategies and tools for the environmental impacts of radionuclides, trace elements and organic contaminants as well as climate related ocean changes and emergency response.

Permanent Missions visit the IAEA Environment Laboratories in Monaco

Organized jointly with UNESCO, and the co-operation of FAO, an IAEA Scientific Conference on the Disposal of Radioactive Waste at Sea convened Member States and experts at the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco in November 1959. This was the first time this important topic was discussed and would ultimately lead to the foundation of its first International Laboratory of Marine Radioactivity in 1961. The opening of the IAEA's marine laboratories in Monaco that same year marked the start of a new era for marine environmental research.

Double the Yield, Double the Harvest: Zanzibar Improves Rice Production Using Nuclear Techniques

Radioactive material can end up on crime scenes as a result of intentional malicious acts such as theft or trafficking of material. It can also be the result of criminals causing unintentional damage to machinery that contains radioactive sources. Regardless of the cause, a crime scene at which radioactive material may be present, requires special care. In cooperation with the Armenian Nuclear Regulatory Authority, the IAEA created a mock crime scene with radioactive material and contaminated evidence to simulate investigation and evidence collection in a safe and secure manner.
